What's the best thing you've lost?

Posted on Nov 3rd, 2008 by FourWinds : Student FourWinds
This is in Response to the Questions and Reflections for November 03, 2008:

Although this thing isn't necessarily "lost", I'm still searching for the inner kid in me.  I guess as kids, we're always curious to explore the world.  We usually stick our noses where they don't belong, and often times, we get scolded by adults for bad behavior; but hey, that's the fun of being a kid.  I guess when we get older, we slightly become narrowminded.  Although the trials in life allow us for a better understanding of the world, I think we sort of  get confined to certain ideologies and beliefs that we become oblivious to everything else.  I guess what I'm trying to say is that we lose that spontineaty that drives us to explore the world around us--maybe that explains why young children learn things so rapidly, such as language and speech.

Frankly, I miss having my curious self.  The self that is always ready to explore and expediate interractions with others and the things around me.  I can't say that I've lost it completely.  I guess there are certain situations in life that somehow stimulate our sense of curiousity to learn and not care what others think.  I sometimes dance to old tunes I've heard as a kid or even sing privately in the shower to some familiar tunes I once heard.  I believe we as humans fluctuate back and forth between the realm of adulthood and towards that naive childlike mentality during different circumstances.  Case in point: cartoons.  Yes, Disney movies are able somehow warp us back to a time when laughter and innocence were the pinnacle of childhood.  And coupled with catchy tunes and memorable lyrics, it's no wonder I find myself singing along as well.

Looks like I've strayed of topic...

I just want to find myself again.  The me that is always curious and opinionated.  I can't say I've lost it because I know it's still somewhere inside.

Busy

Posted on Nov 14th, 2008 by FourWinds : Student FourWinds

I'm going to have a busy week.  Literally all of my classes have condensed it's due date to somewhere along the 19th of November.  Is that some sort of tradition because I've noticed the trend.  Well, ya gotta do what ya gotta do.

In addition, I'm trying to complete an oil painting for a competition the cover of Viet Tide Magazine.  First place gets $2000; place gets $1000; and third place gets $500.  The deadline is November 20, and it's getting frustrating for me to complete it because I've just gotten the magazine last week, read throught its criteria, and now this outside workload is piling up with my already busy schedule.  Although I only have 12 units this semester, sometimes the classes take so much time and energy  to keep up, especially art classes.  I'll have to hang in there.  If I get 3rd place in the contest, I'll be thrilled.  I know there are a lot of talented artists out there, and I'm only one grain of sand compared other talented fine artists out there.  However, I'll be aiming for first prize, and it doesn't hurt to give it a shot--minus the added stress...

Today

Posted on Nov 27th, 2008 by FourWinds : Student FourWinds
Today I turn 19.  That leaves me 1 more year before exactly 2 decades of my life has passed.  Where does the time go?  I reflect back, and I find myself having the same feeling as when I turned 18.  Nothing's changed since then.  However, I feel like everything around me has...

Funny thing is, today is also Thanksgiving.  My parents just arrived home, bringing toasted duck and pig.  I have to say, these proteins taste better than turkey.  Our family don't really gather around and say our thanks.  I guess we were never into that sort of arrangement.  Maybe it's because we give thanks internally, and we sort of bury it behind our busy disposition.  But if I could physically share my thanks out loud, I'd say I'm thankful for having a family and a warm home to come home to every single day.  Call me cliche, but I'd  stay true to how I feel.

What are you thankful for?

Stars

Posted on Nov 29th, 2008 by FourWinds : Student FourWinds
Everytime I look outward towards the sky at night, I wonder how far away and how much of the past am I looking at when I'm zoned in by the glimmering stars above.  To think that it has taken thousands and thousands of years for the light to reach Earth is incomprehensible.  But what really gets me thinking is wondering if we are alone in the universe.

Of course we're not alone.  I mean from looking in history books, old paintings, or even anecdotal stories from eyewitnesses, there have been enough substance to back up the assertion of the existence of alien life.  However, I suppose there are skeptics out there to debunk these so-called science-fictionalized materials.  No one is forced to believe what he or she wants, but I think people should always keep an open mind about the world.  I guess this is true--not just for believing in the existence of extraterrestrials--but also being able to investigate different aspects and morals of life that people choose to be ignorant about.

Anyway, school starts soon and finals are a pain...
